Japanese dining with style -NOBU, Mayfair

I decided to try this fusion Japanese restaurant out after hearing lots of good things about it. I was surprised to hear that it has recently lost its Michelin title. Soon as I walked inside, I was in love with the modern, classy interior and ambience of the restaurant. However, it was understandable that due to the massive demand it was impossible to maintain the peaceful environment that Michelin restaurants always have.

Opened the menu to find a super wide selection of hot and cold dishes. It all got confusing because there was no sectioning between starters / main, Nobu was more like a sharing of small plates dining fashion. At first I was a little overwhelmed and confused but the staff kindly recommended some of the customer favourites- and not until I tasted them did I understood why they were the favourites.

Dining area- a little crowded and noisy but very comfortable
A bar area downstairs- beautiful decorations and a somewhat romantic feel
The Food
Yellow tail Sashimi with Jalapeno RRP£21

Hamachi (Yellow tail) has always been one of my favourite fish. It is light yet full of texture and it doesn't have that heavy fishy taste. This dish was highly recommended because of the sour yuzu sauce and jalapeno that brought out the freshness of the fish. A little expensive you might say, but it's definitely worth every penny.
Crispy Pork Belly with Spicy Miso RRP£18.75
This tastes similar to Chinese style crispy pork belly. Being Chinese, I didn't think this was anything special and certainly did not worth the price.
Crispy Rice with Spicy Tuna RRP£18.50
EDITOR's FAVOURITE: This was most definitely my favourite dish from Nobu. The idea of deep fried crispy rice cubes was very original, and it worked so well with the fresh tuna mayo on top. A super exciting dish that I highly recommend and you should definitely try!!

Half Portion of Black Cod Den Miso RRP£ 22

EDITOR's FAVOURITE: This is, according to staff, Nobu's signature dish. Indeed. The presentation is intriguing. The cod was cooked to perfection, it was just cooked with bits of pink visible. The fish was so moist and juicy. Gourmet.

Soft Shell Crab Kara-age with Ponzu RRP£ 11.75

Wagyu Gyoza with Tosazu RRP£ 20.5
Personally thought it was a waste of such quality beef. When blended into the dumplings, it didn't taste any different to ordinary frozen ones you could get from the local supermarkets. A bit of a miss for me.

Baby Tiger Shrimp Tempura RRP£ 17.5
EDITOR's FAVOURITE: Possibly the most generous portion of the night. Fresh (massive) shrimps in fresh batter. It came with three dips but my favourite was the garlic mayo dip. You can also choose to have one dip only.

House Special Roll RRP £11
EDITOR's FAVOURITE: The idea of rapping raw raddish outside the seaweed was very, very clever. It instantly removes the heavy, sticky rice texture that you would normally get from sushi, and actually made me crave more. Price is very good as well, considering five fish were used in the roll.

CHOCOLATE BENTO BOX   RRP £11.5
Chocolate Fondant with Green Tea Ice Cream
Chocolate fudge cake with home made green tea ice-cream? THE PREFECT MATCH. The green tea ice cream took away the heavy sweetness of the chocolate. Delicious!

Mix berry mock-tail RRP £7

Overall Rating:
(The restaurant looks stunning and modern. The food was amazing with beautiful presentation. Portions were small and a little pricey)

Staff:
(Very attentive service. They also knew the menu inside out and were very patient when I asked them for help)

Food:
(The menu , in my opinion, was a little too wide. For first time diners this could be a little confusing. If you are lost and do not know what to order, get the staff to recommend you the most popular dishes, as they know the menu very well)

Hygiene:

Value:
(1) I was surprised to find that Nobu never charged us for the refill of the fresh green tea that we had. Between us we shared 6 cups of hot green tea but only £2 was charged!
(2) Many would probably find the price tag a little too high, especially after knowing that it has recently lost its Michelin title. Nonetheless, there are dishes that, given the quality I thought were totally worth the money.
(3)A 15% service is added to your bill. This is much higher than any Michelin restaurants.

What a great review! I love your photos. The Waygu Gyoza looks really good. I've never seen gyoza like that before.

The gyoza was mediocre, for the price it was nothing special. But everything else was amazeballs!
