Red Sea - Traditional Eritrean cuisine

So after hearing many good things about this not-so-common type of cuisine, I decided to be adventurous and give it a try- and to my surprise, it was actually very original and delicious. Eritrea is in the edge of Africa, and is sandwiched between Yemen and Ethiopia. Its location gave its food a hint of middle eastern flavour, but it managed to retain its originality.

Traditional Eritrean Platter

Overall Rating:
As this is probably not your everyday kind of food, I strongly recommend you to give this a try. It is different, fun, delicious, yet very affordable. If feeling adventurous, try eating with your hands like the locals do! (although you would probably fail)

Service:
The waitress who served us were very impatient. I am assuming that they get a lot of foreign customers who tries their food out of curiosity. She took her time recommending dishes to us and made sure we did not over order.
The owner was very enthusiastic about his food, when we left it was almost closing time but he took time to write down what was on the platter for us.

Food:
To my surprise, the platter as well as the pancakes were served cold. The platter is a good choice for those who are trying Eritrean food for the first time, as you get a good variety of fillings. I also recommend their lamb stew (see below)

Value:
Super super affordable and VERY generous portion sizes.

A small and cosy local favourite with a convenient location on the high street of Shepherd's Bush, London

Lamb Mandi RRP £8.00 (or £5.50 without rice)
Steamed spring lamb with herbs

This piece of lamb is very tender and juicy. It is very well seasoned in traditional Eritrean herbs and is cooked beautifully. I highly recommend you order this with pilau rice!
Grilled Sea bass with herbs RRP £ 10.00
Served with rice
This sea bass is served fresh from the grill, so all its natural flavours are retained. However, the skin was a bit of a waste as it was too burnt to eat. I recommend this if you like original flavour without much seasoning.

Red Sea Special Platter ( Small £ 17 / Large £28 )
Includes: Lega Tibbs (Tender boneless lamb leg sauteed with rosemary, onion and green pepper)
Awaze Tibbs (Tender lamb fried in specially seasoned red chilli sauce)
Zigni (Cubes of lean lamb in a slow-cooked spicy stew, seasoned with chilli powder, onion, garlic and spiced butter)
Dero Wot (Hot spicy chicken stew cooked with onion, garlic and spiced butter, served with hard boiled egg)
Ye-Tsom-Beyaynetu (Variety of vegetarian dishes including chick peas, lentil and yellow bean sauces)
Steamed pancakes (served cold)
